The home is our safe zone, right? It is at home where we are supposed to feel peace, calmness, and protection from the outside world. But, what happens when things erupt at home? When you have a fight, make up, but, things still feel tense. When you yell at a game on TV, afterwards do you feel drained? If you experience terrible news, suddenly this safe haven you created becomes, well, somehow less inviting. These feelings that may seem “unexplainable” could actually be the collection of negative energy hiding in your home. What is Negative Energy? Negative energy collects in the home through your emotions. The energy you put out, (anger, sadness, anxiety, or fear) are collected in the things around you. Things such as the couch, walls, or carpet. Objects, however, cannot release this energy as easily as humans can, so the negative energy gets stored up and escalates till suddenly you feel your home is “off”. How Can I Remove the Negative Energy? You have the power to remove the negative energy from your home, and there are very simple ways to do so.
Tidy up - picking up clutter brings balance to the home and opens up areas where the energy may be hiding.
Literally sweep it out the window - open a space and imagine sweeping the energy out a window or door as you would dust.
Tourmaline - Tourmaline is an inexpensive crystal that absorbs negative energy. You can scatter these throughout the home, especially if you know a troublesome place.
Nature - bringing plants and nature into the home is a great way to bring light into your home.
Creative positive feelings - Spray your favorite scent or burn white sage to brighten the rooms in your home. You can mix a few cups of water with a few drops of your favorite essential oil (Rose, lavender, and frankincense are known to be cleansing agents, but use whatever brings your joy!)
Move the furniture - Shift the furniture around and see how it makes you feel. It’s very possible that moving a chair this way or the TV stand that way may alter how you feel, even if you can’t explain why!
Sage or Palo Santo - Commonly referred to as smudging. You can use also use spray if you would rather not have the smoke from the incense .or fresh batch.
Why Should I Remove the Negative Energy in my Home?
Aside from a lingering feeling in the back of your mind saying something is off, cleansing your home has many different benefits. Improvements in sleep and a heightened sense of peace are two improvements you might see. A cleansed space will help improve mood, teamwork, healing, and temperament. Your home or apartment is like a sponge. It is a container for storing your belongings but it can also store emotions and energy, being absorbed into the walls, furniture, carpet, and other objects. “Energy dust bunnies” can accumulate due to negative thoughts, occurrences, stress, negative emotions that you or your family have experienced in space. If you have had recent moments of fear or frustration, there is a high likelihood that your space has absorbed some of that energy.
When Should I Work on Removing Negative Energy?
Common times you’ll need to remove negative energy are when you move into a new space (preferably before you move your belongings in), or when a roommate moves out. Other good times to remove negative energy are after an illness, death, fight, home invasion, or other tragic event. If you or your children are having trouble sleeping or have night terrors and if you just need a breath of fresh air, a cleansing may be in order.
The first step is to clear the clutter in your space. After the clutter has been removed we can use Sage or Palo Santo to smudge the space which removes any of the Energy Dust Bunnies. We can then add in Plants, Tourmaline or Salt lamps which can continue to regulate the ongoing energy of the space by absorbing any negativity and neutralizing it.
How To Smudge:
“There’s a long history of Native Americans using sage to connect to the spirit world and cleanse the body and space of impurities before a ceremony,” Maggie Harrsen states. “The life force energy of its smoke penetrates deep into the ether and alters the vibration of a space, or living being, by absorbing any heavy, dense energy.” What you can use: Palo Santo, White Sage, Resin Incense Stick
*You can use a mist if you would rather it be smoke-free
Make sure you open all the windows of your apartment or home. Light a candle and set an intention. Light the Sage or Palo Santo with the candle. At this point you can begin to walk around your space going from the lowest level upwards from room to room. You can use your hand or a feather to waft the smoke to all four corners of each space and then direct the smoke out through the windows and doors. Once you have finished getting your smudge on, you can extinguish it by rubbing it in sand, on concrete or stamping it out in a ceramic bowl. Please, note that if you put it in water, you will not be able to use the stick another time.
